Lorenzo Di Simo
PhD student
Lorenzo Di Simo is a PhD student in “drugs and bioactive substances sciences” at University of Pisa. He graduated in January 2021 discussing an experimental thesis in medicinal chemistry: the thesis project concerned about the development of synthetic pathways to obtain dual inhibitors of Integrins and Metalloproteases of the Extracellular Matrix with potential antitumor activity. In November 2022 won a doctoral bourse financed by PON about thematics of Green and innovation. His project concerns about Green Chemistry, and the main focus is the development of new generation solvents and their application in pharmaceutical synthesis: they can be recycled, they’re easy to recover and some of them can be obtained from natural subtrates, showing therefore excellent environmental features. This new classes of solvents will be deeply investigated in order to replace volatile organic solvents, no longer sustainable due to their toxicity and polluting effects.
Newchem S.p.A., a company operating in the pharmaceutical synthesis field, will be also active part of the project, in a concrete attempt to encourage the formation of a reciprocal relationship of inclusion between university and the corporate world.
